St. Clair College requested a concept to improve the existing main entrance to, and first impression of, the Campus. This request proved to be challenging in that the location of the existing entrance is partially obscured by the main bulk of the building and the focal point seems to be directed more toward the backyards of the neighbouring residential subdivision. It was recognized early on that the success of the renovated entrance lobby would be inseparable from the redesign of the entrance plaza.
The entrance plaza must be designed to be recognized from a distance as the entrance gateway to draw visitors to the entrance lobby as the main port of arrival. Once inside the visitor needs to be provided with an effective way-finding system to maintain the flow of people arriving and departing.
It is important to remember the importance of connecting, whether it is connecting people to information, services, media or to their peers and colleagues. Our design strives to create an environment that fosters community, and supports a culture of participation and contribution.
Outdoor Plaza — We wanted St. Clair College's exterior entrance to get people's attention, whether from students, visitors, or a passersby from the local community. This would mean that the visual impact reflects the youthful image of the school, and gets people excited to be there. This appeal can be achieved by creating a captivating media focal point, or by reviving the allure of an existing water feature. A successful strategy will also use the landscape, material changes, colour, lighting, and signage to create visual impact. As a high‐traffic hub of activity, the beauty of the exterior plaza needs to be underpinned by high‐performing functionality.
To adapt to ongoing change in use and occupancy volume, the space needs to be responsive and pragmatic. Infrastructure for public transit, vehicle drop‐off, and pedestrian traffic will need to be evaluated and accommodated in the design. The provision of sheltered space and exterior hook‐ups will contribute to the ongoing multi‐seasonal utility of the outdoor plaza.
Interior Lobby — The lobby supports a large volume of activity on a day‐to‐day basis. Eye‐catching media walls, inviting service areas and engaging water features can all play a role in providing a youthful visual impact within the space. These focal points will be visually supported and enhanced by lighting design, space layout, material choices and signage throughout. The visual appeal and flow of St. Clair College's interior lobby is founded on an understanding of practical use. At Glos, we are committed to learning and understanding the complexity of the needs of the ongoing users so we can meet and exceed those needs and improve day‐to‐day efficiency and function. This design will integrate flexible, on- demand workstations, in addition to a permanent, accessible service desk, including an enclosed security booth. Consideration of seating, air flow, lighting, audio systems, material choices, and network connectivity will all contribute to a successful scheme.
